Martin Breidt has written an excellent article that tries to eliminate the typical confusions about gamma correction and linear workflow in computer graphics. It explains why there is such a thing as gamma correction, why proper gamma correction is important and what happens if you simply ignore it. The article is applicable to all CG tools, but shows specifically how gamma correction works in 3DS Max.
