AMD breaks 8GHz overclock with upcoming FX processor, sets world record

AMD’s overclocking team pushes a pre-release AMD FX-8150 processor to well over 8GHz, setting a world record for modern processor frequency in the process. More at HotHardware.

I wish AMD released more tech details on this benchmark. The bulldozer will come with 6 or 8 cores, but they didn’t say which one they used to set the record. They also only held that speed for a few seconds and doesn’t look like there was any real load on the CPU.

Still, I wonder if all this is pointless. With GPU processors out performing CPUs. Is a 8Ghz bulldozer really that much faster then code run on an overclocked GPU?
