Google announces WebM royalty-free media file format for the web

As previously reported Flash-free HTML 5 standards-based web video playback is getting closer. Google has announced that their recently-acquired VP8 video codec is now available as open source, enabling all web browsers to play web video without licensing issues. WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM launch is supported by Mozilla, Opera, Google, NVidia and more than forty other companies. YouTube is of course part of the initiative. More at the WebM project's blog and WebMProject.org.
